People for Us

People for Us is a new peer visiting service who visits disabled adults and tāngata whaikaha Māori who live in who live in homes funded by Disability Support Services to find out if they are:

  • living their good life
  • getting good support
  • safe.

Why was People for Us set up?

There has not been enough support or checks on disabled people in their homes. This has made it easier for abuse to happen.

People for Us is set up to listen to disabled people who might be most at risk.

What happens at the visit?

People for Us has two visitors:

Kaiārahi: a disabled person who will lead the visit

Kaiāwhina: assistant to the Kaiārahi.

The visitors talk with the disabled person to get to know them and make sure they are safe and their voices are heard.

We will work with the disabled person and others to assist them to feel safe and heard.
