This year, as part of our Annual General Meeting, we presented our two annual awards:

  • the Leona Gitamans Te Aranga Self-Advocacy Award for self-advocacy
  • the Make it Easy Award for their commitment to having information in Easy Read.

Congratulations to Kris Roguski

This year, we were proud to present the Leona Gitmans Award for 2022 to Rotorua Group member Kris Roguski. Kris, after learning about his own rights, now speaks up for those who cannot speak up for themselves.

Kris has supported the Rotorua Group to bring issues to the People First NZ National Committee, and to the government. In August 2022, Kris attended United Nations in Geneva as part of the Independent Monitoring Mechanism (IMM).

We appreciate Kris’ commitment and how he goes the extra mile to support members of People First NZ.

Congratulations to Te Whatu Ora

This year the Make it Easy Award went to Te Whatu Ora for exceptional service – under their old name in 2021, the COVID-19 Vaccination team at the Ministry of Health, provided their information about the COVID-19 vaccine in Easy Read.

In picking this year’s winner, the National Committee said that having this information in Easy Read meant people could understand what the vaccine was for, how to get the vaccine and could make their own decisions about having the vaccine.
