{gspeech}On 5-10th November Hamish Taverner and Caroline Quick of the People First National Committee travelled to Sydney Australia to attend the 2013 Australasian Society for Intellectual Disability (ASID) conference called “Research to Practice”.

Both Hamish and Caroline were sponsored by the New Zealand ASID Committee.  At the conference, Hamish and Caroline did a 15 minute presentation called Let’s Talk.

Let’s Talk was written at the People First self advocacy forum held at the 2012 ASID conference in Wellington.  Over 50 people with learning disability took part.  People talked about 6 topics from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

These were the 6 topics:

  • friends and relationships
  • making my own decisions
  • real work, real pay
  • being in the community
  • my money
  • having the right support

The Sydney conference was very well run and there were over 150 presentations and sessions on topics about learning disability to choose from.  It was great to hear about the self advocacy movement in Australia and what projects are being done around the world.

Thank you to NZASID for helping People First New Zealand to attend this important event.{/gspeech}
